How HDD functions in you Device?

But before getting into Solid state drives, you must know what is is Hard Disk Drives (HDD). This technology has been around for more than 50 years and its storage capacity has continued to increase with the decrease in their physical size. Hard disk drives rely on spinning disks to read and write data, which makes its more mechanical due to which reading and writing speed get reduced.


What are SSD?

SSDs are solid state drives. They are different from hard disk drives, which stores data on a spinning disk. SSDs use flash memory instead of a traditional disk to store data. This makes them faster, easier to load and save files, and more reliable than traditional hard drives.

An SSD is a solid state drive. Solid state drives are different from traditional hard drives in that they don’t have any moving parts.

An SSD reads and writes data to underlying interconnected flash memory chips made out of silicon. These chips use floating gate transistors (FGTs) to hold an electrical charge, which enables the SSD to store data even when it is not connected to a power source. Each FGT stores a single bit of data, f the electrical charge is present then it will store 1 and in the absence of electrical charge it will have 0.

How fast can SSDs be?

SSDs can be as fast as 1,000 times faster than traditional hard drives.

For normal computer tasks like opening a program or browsing the web, HDDs can access data at speeds of 0.1 to 1.7 MB/s while SSDs can offer speeds of 50 to 250 MB/s for these “read/write” operations.

Different types of SSD out there

From the beginning the size of HDD are larger, but smallest size offered by SDD in market is comparable with size of Glue Stick. There are different form factors available in the market.

The most common SSD form factors:

  • 2.5″ form factor is the most common; offers the best value per GB; enclosed design
  • mSATA has a very small form factor; different connection type; bare circuit board; excellent where space is of concern
  • M.2 is a bare circuit board; available in both SATA and PCIe NVMe; small form factor; the size of a Glue Stick

How to choose the right SSD for your computer?

Here are few steps to keep in mind while searching of SSD

  • The very first thing is to know your Laptop/Computer : You have to look for M.2 slot on your mother board. If not, you may need a 2.5-inch drive instead.
  • SATA is cheaper but slower: If your computer supports M.2 slot then go for NVMe/PCIe or Optane drives, consider buying a drive with one of these technologies. However, SATA drives are more common, usually cost less and still offer excellent performance for common applications.
  • Just keep in your mind that any SSD is far more better than a HDD. Just keep in mind that the worst SSD is at least 3x times faster than HDD.

    Generally it should be in your SSD as C drive is where your operating systems is installed and OS is installed in SSD to ripe the benefits of SSD.

  • Will SSD and HDD hybrid in a laptop decrease battery life?

    No, instead because of SSD your battery life will increase. The only thing is you must have your operating system installed in your SSD
